Speaker and Topic: Speaker: Mike Jenkins Senior Scientist with the City of Edmonton (Parks and Urban Forestry) Topic: Overview of Insects and Diseases of the Urban Forest The urban forest has many challenges when it comes to managing insects pests and diseases. Challenging growing conditions, environmental stress, and competition for water leads to stressed trees. Monoculture boulevards and lack of understory provide ideal conditions for pests to thrive. This is a look at some of the common insect pests and diseases we see on Edmonton's managed tree inventory, including native pests like forest tent caterpillar, aphids, black knot, and yellow-headed spruce sawfly, as well as introduced pests like birch leafminer, ash leaf cone roller, and satin moth, as well as invasive threats like Dutch elm disease and emerald ash borer, and some of the tactics used in integrated pest management to deal with these issues.
