Dear AALA Members,
On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am pleased to share an important update regarding the leadership and operational direction of the Alberta Association of Landscape Architects.
As our profession navigates the transition to the Professional Governance Act, the Board has been focused on ensuring that the AALA remains a stable, compliant, and member-focused organization. To support this objective and provide thoughtful stewardship, the Board has appointed Michael Pinkoski as our Interim Executive Director through December 31, 2026.
Many of you may already be familiar with Michael’s work. He has provided vital support to the AALA since we engaged Halford Consulting in late 2025. During this time, he has led the organizational changes and regulatory governance required for our migration to the PGA.
Given his deep involvement in these initiatives and his weekly collaboration with our Board and staff, the Board feels Michael is a natural fit for this role. This appointment allows the AALA to retain his expertise as he helps us determine exactly what is required from our executive leadership following the PGA shift.
About Michael Pinkoski

Michael brings a strong combination of strategic leadership and organizational experience to this role. His background reflects AALA’s commitment to continuity and stability:
Professional Background: Michael has a background in medical and health sciences complemented by studies in Public Sector Management and Business Administration.
Experience: He has more than 30 years of international experience in non-profit, private, and public organizations and has led research groups in Canada, the US, and the UK.
Specialization: He provides business mentoring for new and growing ventures with a special interest in professional organizations and non-profits. Governance and strategic planning in regulated industries are among his areas of expertise.
Strategic Advisory: Michael is widely recognized for mentoring and strategic planning for non-profit organizations, providing guidance on governance structures, writing policy and procedures, and risk management.
As Interim Executive Director, Michael will work closely with staff, partners, and the Board to support ongoing operations, advance key initiatives, and ensure that AALA continues to effectively serve its members and community.
This interim period provides the Board of Directors the necessary space to continue developing a long-term leadership plan for the organization. We intend to launch a formal search for a permanent Executive Director in late 2026 or early 2027, ensuring the AALA is ideally positioned for its next chapter.
Please join us in welcoming Michael to this expanded role within the AALA team.
