Nature, Art, Science
Kira is a biomimicry artist and researcher that creates new innovations by learning from the problem-solving strategies of nature. Building on ten years of experience as a Landscape Technologist, Kira explores structures across scales – for example, looking at tiny biological microstructures and imagining their possibilities in art and architecture. Combining skills in research, illustration, 3D modelling, and manufacturing, she creates eye-catching images and illuminated art.
Kira’s current project, Diatom Lanterns, goes from biology to design and back again. Through an iterative process, Kira is learning about the light-modifying shells of a microscopic algae called diatoms, and integrating their features and functions into wood and metal lanterns. AI brainstorming sessions create compelling images of what could be, exploring emerging technologies and speculative futures.
Through this work she shares the power of nature-based approaches and the power of combining science, art, and impact.
