Biography

Sheila Boudreau, BA, BLA, MA (Planning), is Founder and Principal Landscape Architect + Planner at SpruceLab Inc. She has over three decades of experience in both the private and public sectors following bachelor degrees in Landscape Architecture and Fine Art from the University of Guelph, and a Master of Arts (Planning) from the University of Waterloo. She founded SpruceLab in 2020 to be collaborative and nature-based with a community focus, and the intent to prioritize Indigenous voices and create jobs and where possible - to honour her Mi’kmaq ancestors in this work. Credentials include full memberships (with Seal) with Ontario Association of Landscape Architects (OALA), Atlantic Association of Landscape Architects (APALA), Alberta Association of Landscape Architects (AALA), and the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA). She is also a Registered Professional Planner with full membership in the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI) and the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP). Training includes OCAP® (Ownership, Control, Access, and Possession) from the First Nations Information Governance Centre, Indigenous awareness (Native Canadian Centre of Toronto), and the International Green Infrastructure Certification Program.

Previous professional positions includes: Senior Landscape Architect at Emmons & Olivier Resources (1 yr), Senior Landscape Architect at Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (2 yrs), Urban Designer at City of Toronto (6 yrs), Landscape Architect at DTAH (12 yrs), and Landscape Designer at City of Waterloo (4 yrs). Sheila is on the Board of Directors for the Landscape Architecture Community Foundation (since 2021), the Board of Advisors for Urban Water TMU (Toronto Metropolitan University (since 2017), and represented the Ontario Association of Landscape Architects on the Green Infrastructure Ontario Coalition (2015 – 2020). She was a member of the national Task Force for Housing & Climate (led by the PLACE Centre at Smart Prosperity Institute, 2023 - 2024), a co-lead for a Climate Risk Initiative’s net-zero training module on governance for Engineers Canada (2023), and a technical advisor for the Canadian Standards Association’s standards for bioretention design and construction (2017 – 2019, now supporting updates). She was a jury member for the 2024 Ontario Association of Architects Headquarters landscape design competition, and the 2022 Niagara Biennial Design Awards. Since 2017 she has been a sessional instructor teaching about urban design and green infrastructure at Toronto Metropolitan University, University of Toronto, and University of Waterloo. And a book she wrote for children (8-12) on the importance of nature in cities will be published by Owlkids Books in 2026.
