Magazine: Terrain, published annually in November
2025 Issue Theme: WATER
Contact: magazine@aala.ab.ca
Deadline for Expression of Interest: May 30th, 2025

Theme: WATER

Water. It shapes land, sustains life, influences all habitats and settlements, and holds deep cultural, ecological, and political significance. It is both infrastructure, inspiration and recreation - sometimes visible, sometimes buried, often taken for granted. In Alberta, water is paradox: abundant and scarce, pure and polluted, revered and regulated. It flows through the histories of place and people, from glacial headwaters to prairie rivers, from wetlands to storm sewers, from drinking fountains to drying reservoirs. It connects us across time and space-through Indigenous knowledge, colonial imposition, climate emergency, and design innovation.

For the 2025 issue of Terrain, we invite reflections on Water in all its forms and meanings. How does water flow through your work, your practice, and the places you shape? We are seeking submissions that engage with water as a physical material, a design constraint/opportunity, a legal right, a cultural story, a shifting climate reality, or other ideas.  Projects, essays, interviews, photo essays, field notes, or other formats are all welcome.
