James Allan - Landscape Architectural Technologist

After graduation, what was the first position you had? How did that shape where you are now as a Landscape Architectural Technologist?

During my 1st and 2nd year at NAIT I worked for a residential landscape contractor. After graduation I worked at a tree nursery. Both opportunities gave me hands-on experience and understanding of constructability. This was later transferred into my drafting skills.

What is something that surprised you at the start of your career? or What is something that surprises you about being a Landscape Architectural Technologist?

There are a lot of opportunities as an LAT - Public/private, consultant/contractor. Growth within the profession is only limited to your effort and skills.

What are some of your roles and responsibilities?

Some responsibilities on a given project could include: proposal writing, project management, site inventory and analysis, detail design, cost estimates, preparation of tender documents and contract administration.

What are you passionate about as a Landscape Architectural Technologist?

Being part of a project from start to finish and working through the challenges during design and construction.

Returning to a completed project to see the site being utilized as intended.

What advice would you give a new Landscape Architectural Technologist?

Never stop learning
