Question and Answers

After graduation, what was the first position you had? How did that shape where you are now as a Landscape Architectural Technologist?

I worked as a Landscape Designer/Foreman, which granted me experience in both design and practical application. This allowed me to experience the relationship between the two and taught me how to manage client expectations while providing a quality finished product.

What is something that surprised you at the start of your career? or What is something that surprises you about being a Landscape Architectural Technologist?

Clients don't see the value in unlimited budgets...

This is most likely dependant on the firm, but I never thought as a tech I would have an opportunity to take part in all aspects of a project let alone manage my own projects. Fortunately I work for a Firm that puts trust in their employees for better or for worse.

What are some of your roles and responsibilities?

Drafting services, design, project management, contract administration and making runs to the liquor store for the office.

What skills do you feel are important to have as a Landscape Architectural Technologist?

Being able to provide useful input into a design will always be valuable as well as becoming proficient at hand rendering in order to convey your ideas clearly

What advice would you give a new Landscape Architectural Technologist?

Pay attention to any design theory hurled your way and make sure you take time to learn how to efficiently use your drafting software.

Also, no matter the standards imposed by your firm, don't miss the small stuff.
