Question and Answers

After graduation, what was the first position you had? How did that shape where you are now as a Landscape Architectural Technologist?

As I look back on my career, I am grateful for my first position at Stantec in Calgary. I was young and nervous, but working for an established organization gave me exposure to many different types of projects, industry specialties, and career paths. I learnt to always seek more information by asking questions and tapping into co-workers knowledge and experience. By doing this, I was able to figure out my strengths and interests relating to landscape and build a career that has consistently kept me engaged and excited.

What skills do you feel are important to have as a Landscape Architectural Technologist?

I think it is important to have a broad range skill set. The obvious skills of good communication and organization come to mind, but having an understanding of projects from preliminary design all the way through to construction completion is a valuable asset. From there, one can hone in on key skills and strengths that pertain specific fields of Landscape Architecture whether in be design, drafting, construction, project management, or many others.

Describe something that you have found challenging as a LAT?. How did you overcome this?

Early in my career it felt like an LAT role was limited to preparing construction drawings. Through personal growth and development and the drive to gain experience in many avenues of Landscape Architecture, I saw a whole, green, world open up for me.

What advice would you give a new Landscape Architectural Technologist?

Seek to gain experience in as many areas of landscape architecture that you can. Be open to opportunities that may push your comfort zone. Its amazing how much you can learn and what new opportunities are created with every small step outside comfort boundaries.

What are your future goals?

I want to get more people, public and private, to see the value of landscape infrastructure. Create a desire to protect what we have or include more than the baseline standard. Establish more green space and outdoor connectivity that adds value and creates a sense of community.
