Question and Answers

After graduation, what was the first position you had? How did that shape where you are now as a Landscape Architect?

I was hired at IBI Group and I was in charge of CCC/FAC inspections, contractor coordination and some design work. Being put out in the field introduced me to the importance of buildable designs, and coordination and communication with the various characters that are involved in the design, implementation and inspection of our work.
I believe understanding this is fundamental to being a well-rounded professional.

What is something that surprised you at the start of your career? or What is something that surprises you about being a Landscape Architect?

I was surprised how ill-equipped I was to work in an office right out of university. But I had great mentors and colleagues that guided me towards success.

Now nothing surprises me.

What are some of your roles and responsibilities?

I manage our team in Edmonton, Red Deer and Vancouver, and I oversee all design work, mentor staff, collaborate with our internal colleagues and consultants on projects, lead client communications on LA work and develop proposals.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Lots of emails, coordination, reviewing drawings, fees, cost estimates, and coffee.

What skills do you feel are important to have as a Landscape Architect?

Emotional intelligence, practical thinking, collaborate spirit, tough skin, willingness to keep learning.

What are you passionate about as a Landscape Architect?

I am passionate about public spaces, connecting with users, seeing successful implementation contributing to the sense of community.

Tell us about some of the exciting projects you have been a part of.
