The Recreation and Parks department is seeking an experienced individual with strong interpersonal and project management skills to join their team for a term assignment. Reporting to the Senior Project Manager, Parks Development, the Parks Planning Specialist will support the work of the Recreation and Parks department through coordination of specific park projects. In consultation with professional consultants and the City’s Capital Projects Office, utilizing excellent communication and collaboration skills, this position will assist in parks design development, public participation, and construction contract management.


This individual will support the Sr. Project Manager in the development and application of key processes, policies and standards that are required to advance the development of parks within the City of St. Albert. The Specialist will also support the Sr. Project Manager in strategic initiatives, including representing the department on relevant capital projects, asset management, long term parks and recreation amenity planning and other parks-related projects.


This position collaborates with a variety of internal and external clients, so a high degree of tact and diplomacy are required. We seek an individual with strong interpersonal and communication skills, including comfort with presenting to groups. Knowledge of municipal government operations including experience with municipal budget processes and knowledge of capital project costs and operating impacts is beneficial. 



  • A degree in a related field such as Landscape Architecture, Recreation Administration, Urban Planning or Environmental Science required, with five years experience related to Municipal parks planning is preferred.
  • A diploma in landscape architecture technology, with seven years experience related to municipal parks planning required.
  • Equivalent relevant education and experience may be considered.
  • This position requires knowledge in project management, public participation, community development, recreation and parks trends and drivers, strategic planning and facilitation, negotiation, and mediation.
  • Strong abilities using the programs of the Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Experience with project management software is required.
  • A valid Class 5 Drivers License and a personal vehicle for work use is required.



This position will work a compressed schedule of 72 hours bi-weekly (Monday - Friday, 8:00 – 5:00 with a regular day off [RDO] every two weeks). There is a requirement to work a flexible schedule, to accommodate occasional evening and weekend meetings or project management activities.



$75,985 - $93,520 per annum. In addition, the City of St. Albert offers a generous and comprehensive benefit package.

Candidates that do not meet the full qualifications may be considered for a development opportunity at a lower rate of pay.



This is an 18-month term assignment commencing in December 2021 or early January 2022.
