NAIT Main Campus Hockey Rink, Edmonton
2:30pm – 4:00pm. Landscape Students vs. Staff, AALA & Alumni
This event is worth 2 AALA PDUs
For the past 8 years the NAIT LAT students have been challenging the LAT staff and alumni to a hockey game. Each year the staff and alumni have risen to the challenge. The game was renamed in honour of Andre Schwabenbauer in 2005 and we have been able to win 2 out the 3 years it has been held. Last year we were able to shine with a glorious 20-4 Victory over the students. Once again the call must go out, we have been challenged and are set to defend our honour on Friday March 7, 2008 from 2:30 to 4:00 at the hockey rink on NAIT Main Campus.
We will take all players, we are even looking for supporters to cheer us on. If any of you wish to join us for this challenge please contact Michael Schwabenbauer for more information. You can reach Michael at 780-471-7410 or by email at mschwabe@nait.ca
A student fundraiser social will follow the event at the Tower Lounge at the main campus. Parking for players will be provided at the Engineering Technologies Annex building. We will have a shuttle bus to main campus leaving at 2:00 p.m.
Well, there is exciting news — the AALA is moving closer to our goal of registration under the Professional and Occupational Associations Registration Act (POARA). Here is a recap of what has already been completed by our dedicated volunteers:
May 2005 – AALA submitted their application to Alberta Human Resources and Employment (AHRE).
June 2005 – AALA received approval to move on to the stakeholder consultation process.
October 2005 – Comments and support were solicited from stakeholders such as provincial ministries, municipalities, professional registered organizations and other interested parties.
November 2005 – AALA received stakeholder responses that generally were positive and supportive.
March 2006 – Stakeholder responses were compiled and submitted to AHRE for review. AHRE was satisfied with the comments and our responses to questions put forward by the stakeholders.
April 2006 – AHRE commenced drafting the legislation. The AALA Executive has met and reviewed the draft legislation twice since this date. The AHRE has refined the draft in response.
And where are we today? The AALA’s existing Code of Ethics needs review and rewriting to meet the needs of the legislation being written. If you have an interest in contributing to this phase of the process, please contact the AALA Executive.
Where to next? It’s still along way to go and we will need continued support and input of our AALA members. Once the draft legislation is completed, a second round of consultations will be undertaken. Then, the AALA members get to exercise their right and privilege to vote on the matter. Pending AALA approval, the legislation will then be passed from the POARA Registrar to the AHRE Minister, then to the Standing Policy Committee on Education and Employment, and finally to the Provincial Cabinet and the Lt. Governor for enactment
I would like to extend our thanks to the members who have contributed a substantial amount of their time towards bringing our profession closer to registration. We will keep you informed of our continued progress.

During this time, landscape architects in Canada will join with their colleagues around the world to celebrate.
April recognizes Earth Day on April 22nd and on April 27th, the birthday of Frederick Law Olmsted, founder of the landscape architecture profession in North America; it is the perfect month. The Alberta Association of Landscape Architects is pleased to join the CSLA-AAPC and all our provincial and territorial landscape architecture organizations in these celebrations.
Labour statistics show that landscape architecture is currently one of the fastest growing design professions, and that the demand for landscape architecture services will continue to grow. Our profession needs qualified candidates to meet the needs of the future and we must work together to encourage young people to study landscape architecture.
The CSLA-AAPC 2008 World Landscape Architecture Month campaign encourages everyone to See the Future, Be the Future and invites landscape architects, educators, interns and students to encourage youth in their communities to explore a career in landscape architecture. Let’s all participate and embrace the month of April to celebrate our work and our profession!
HOW CAN YOU PARTICIPATE?
The best way to grow our profession and continue to ensure that landscape architects have a vital role in planning and designing for our communities is to promote a broad understanding of our profession and increase our numbers in the future. Here are a number of things you can do to participate in our challenge.
SET AN EXAMPLE IN YOUR COMMUNITY
With the poster spread throughout communities across Canada, here are some suggestions how you can celebrate the profession by promoting a career in landscape architecture in your community.
Contact your local high school principal or guidance councilor to volunteer with career discovery programs in your community.
Volunteer to speak about landscape architecture at a local school or youth organization.
Serve as a mentor to a student who may be considering landscape architecture among their career options, or to a student already studying in landscape architecture or a related program.
Offer a volunteer work opportunity in your landscape architecture office to local high school students, or to help students meet volunteer hour requirements to obtain their diplomas.
Organize a tree planting or a clean-up campaign in your local park or along a riverbank with your municipality or local community associations. Aim to hold your event in conjunction with Earth Day on April 22nd.
Donate a book on landscape architecture or a subscription to Landscapes/Paysages magazine to your local public library or school guidance office.
There’s plenty of ways to reach out to young people and your community. As you will discover, there are no limits to the possibilities for celebrating landscape architecture with your local schools, colleagues, family, friends and neighbours!
See the Future Be the Future: Participate this April 2008 and celebrate landscape architecture.
