Wild Rose Award

Each year, members of the Alberta Association of Landscape Architects put forward names to be considered for the recipient of the Wild Rose Award; persons in our Association who have inspired and set an outstanding example for the profession. Ron Middleton was the recipient of the Wild Rose Award for 2008.

Ron’s early love of the theatre was transferred to Landscape Architecture and our profession was improved because of it. His many positions within our professional organizations bear witness to his commitment. He held the position of Treasurer for the AALA. He was CSLA President in 1997 and inducted into the College of Fellows in 1999. He served as Chair of the CSLA Accreditation Committee, as one colleague says ‘absolutely forever’. He is currently the Chair of the College of Fellows.

Ron has worked on many significant projects such as the Calgary Weir project on the Bow River and the Oldman River Dam. He was a member of the Advisory Panel for the Turner Valley Gas Plant, and was on the Steering Committee for the Integrated Landscape Management Program and Project for Alberta Sustainable Development. With his team, he was the recipient of the 2004 Premiers Award of Excellence (Bronze) for the Environmental Management System Development.

As a landscape architect, Ron has set an example in the public sector and has acted as a catalyst to incorporate landscape architects into many significant projects. He has been a friend, a source of inspiration and a mentor to many in our profession both in Alberta and across Canada.
